Program

The given program tasked the designers with developing 3 core space types: educational/ classroom spaces, spaces for Worship, and an undefined " Community Support " category. From there, the program was broken down and the designers designated what purpose their community support spaces would serve, and what spaces they would become. I divided by spaces based on programs I believed would support thr goals of buddhist teachings, mainly the Lotus sutra. The Lotus Sutra teaches that all people, regardless of race, gender, culture or background are welcomed to follow the Dharma path, and that all people have an intrinsic Buddha nature within them. The community spaces are focused on creating an environment that welcomes in and encourages people of all cultures to interact with one another and interact with the teachings of the temple. Each space focuses on one or more goals that are outlined in the community support space goals diagram that center on strengthening the community, welcoming newcomers, and engaging with the teachings of Buddhism for common growth amongst all people. These goals are initially divided between education, diversity, social, diversity, celebration, engagement, and outreach. The spaces then became primarily the community gardens and public space focused on celebration, engagement, socialization, and creation of resources. Secondly an event space was created to welcome in people and to allow places for gathering and celebration. Then, workshop spaces were diveded to allow more space for hands on engagement in the arts and practices of Buddhism. Lastly, a resource center and library were established to create space for learning about Buddhism and allowing space for the Buddhist community to provide outreach to the greater community. From there the program was rea arranged and regrouped to place like spaces together. In the final design, these cores were arranged into separate but connected wings and re-defined as an education wing, a worship wing and core, one core based one community engagement and outreach, and one wing based on community discovery and learning, further breakingdown how the community spaces are defined.
