Dallas Lotus Temple : Architecture and Hidden Identity

Spring '16

Project Description

As the flower of a lotus,
Arisen in water, blossoms,
Pure-scented and pleasing the mind,
Yet is not drenched by the water,
In the same way, born in the world,
The Buddha abides in the world;
And like the lotus by water,
He does not get drenched by the world. "

-The Theragatha.

Project: The Lotus Temple is a Buddhist Religious Center in the heart of the arts district of Dallas Texas, near the Wyly Theater. The project proposes a tranquil combination of structural and landscape architecture that experiments with experiential architecture to influence users to abstract themselves from everyday life in order to connect with their inner Buddha nature, a concept within Lotus Buddhism that suggest that all are connected with one another despite their past, present, ethnicity, or background.
